I'm not using iScan for scanning because its quite a crude/limited program. I use VueScan primarily, even though it is closed source, because it is by far the best scanning software on Linux. VueScan supports ICE for all scanners that have this capability in hardware. And more importantly, the only scanning software that works with my Nikon Coolscan V - the open source drivers for sane are useless.

I have a 4490 which I am using under Fedora linux and iscan. I have not found an option to use ICE for dust removal. Your description implies that you can use ICE though it requires more memory. Could you point me to the ICE facility? Maybe it only works with Vuescan? But if it is available with iscan or sane, please let me know. Thanks, Roger rdnelson@princeton.edu
